A Fort Rooted in Resistance
Kittur Fort, located in Belagavi district, is a major symbol of Karnataka’s fight against colonial rule. It was the stronghold of Rani Chennamma, one of India’s earliest women freedom fighters, who boldly challenged the British in 1824.
Architectural and Historic Significance
The fort complex includes the palace, a few temples, and defensive structures like bastions and gateways. Though parts of it are now in ruins, the remains still reflect Maratha-style architecture and local craftsmanship.
Archaeological Museum and Cultural Pride
Inside the fort, an archaeological museum showcases artifacts, weaponry, and portraits from the 19th-century resistance. The annual Kittur Utsava celebrates the queen’s legacy through folk performances, parades, and storytelling.
Kittur Fort offers not just a historical experience but also a deep sense of pride in Karnataka’s heritage and valor.
