The cradle of social reform
Once the capital of the Kalyana Chalukyas, Basavakalyan is a town that gave birth to a movement. It was here in the 12th century that Basavanna, a philosopher and statesman, sowed the seeds of a spiritual and social revolution — the Lingayat movement.
Voice of equality and change
Basavakalyan holds immense significance in Karnataka’s socio-religious history. The Basaveshwara Temple, Anubhava Mantapa (an ancient academy of thinkers), and Basavakalyan Fort reflect the town’s progressive past. It was a place where caste, gender, and economic barriers were challenged through dialogue and devotion.
Visitors here walk not just among ruins, but ideas — ideas that redefined worship and human dignity in medieval India.
